Upgrading buda.org

tl;dr - The server that runs buda.org and the code that's behind it is getting a massive upgrade, and we will be rolling this out sometime in the next couple of weeks.  The look and feel of the site won't be changing much, but the site will be significantly faster and more stable.  If you want to help us test, you can browse the new version at new.buda.org.  Send any issues you find to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Additional Information

This website has been around for quite a while, and as a result much of the software is a few revisions behind.  This causes performance and security problems, and makes it difficult to make changes that would improve the situation.  The main driver for this project was the infamous signup process.  Having the site go down every time registration opens for the more popular leagues is really suboptimal, and we wanted to fix that.  This is why there aren't going to be many visible changes to the site, almost all of the work was done on the backend infrastructure.  We're also not promising that fall hat registration is going to be perfect, but it should be dramatically better.  What we can promise is that it will continue to get better, and our goal is to streamline the registration process to the point where you don't even notice that anyone else is on the site while you are registering.

Beyond this initial launch we also hope to release new features on a more regular basis, and provide a clear place for people to submit ideas.  We want to engage much more with people who use the site regularly, and do what we can to give all of us a much better experience. Stay tuned for details about where and how to submit your ideas - for now if you find anything that doesn't work as expected then please email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Technical Details

The core software that runs buda.org is getting upgraded:

  • Joomla 1.5 --> Joomla 2.5
  • A mix between PHP 4.4 and PHP 5.2 --> PHP 5.4
  • Apache 2.2.17 --> Apache 2.2.24
  • MySQL 5.0 --> MySQL 5.5
  • All custom code is now on Github (in a private organization)
We are also moving from an older Dreamhost server to a much beefier VM on DigitalOcean, and moving to solid state storage.  DigitalOcean also gives us the capability to resize our server on demand, so we could get a few extra cores during registration if needed.  As part of the transition to PHP 5.4 we also did a significant amount of code refactoring and cleanup, so many pages will be much faster, and the code is much more maintainable going forward.  If you are interested in hearing more details or if you want to help out, contact us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Middle School tournament

Congratulations to Shady Hill School for handily winning the first BUDA middle school tournament.  We had six teams from Eastern MA and RI.  Shady Hill not only won all their games, but they showed a lot of class and respect in how they did so.  All the teams played hard and well, and all the coaches are to be commended for bringing out their best.

We hope to run a hat-style middle school tournament in late July (details in June), and another school-based tournament in the fall.  Our hope is to help raise the number and proficiency of middle school programs in the area to make it easier for each of your programs to find some good local games.

Summer Youth Program

Registration is now open for BUDA's Youth Summer Program for students entering grades 3 - 9.  Due to field space constraints, we will have to limit participants, so don't wait. Click here to register through Lexington Department of Recreation (open to kids from all towns).

Our current after-school program (filled up) is running right now, and the kids and coaches are having a fantastic time. The summer program will keep the same awesome ratio of one coach for every 10 kids, but we'll organize it a bit more like teams so that it has a league feel. Kids will get plenty of great instruction, plus scrimmaging. More advanced kids will get the opportunity to scrimmage an outside team.

For more information, please see our youth pages, and 'like' us on facebook at 'BUDA Youth League' to get the latest program information.

Summer Hat League 2013

Registration is being kept open through Sunday, May 19th at 5 PM for men and Wednesday, May 22nd at 5 PM for women! There are spots still available (especially for women). Send in your waiver and register ASAP! Check out the 2013 Summer Hat League page for more information.
