Local schools are gearing up for their spring season and many are in need of coaches. Please consider coaching for a few hours a week; see below for listings.

The following schools are looking for Coaches for 2013 and beyond.

• Acton/Boxboro We currently have 25-30 players from ABRHS.  Our team is a town club team and is not recognized by the high school at this time.  In addition, we have a few players from the Parker Charter school, since they do not have enough students for their own team.
  The players and parent volunteers ran a fall training session and we are continuing the team this spring.  The team will practice everyday from 3-5:30 at Nara Park in Acton.  We will be signing up for league games in Feb and also hope to play in 2-3 tournaments this spring.
  We would love to find a head coach to join the team.  Right now we get some help from a part time coach (Mike Morton), but his time is limited.  We are currently relying on the team captains to run and train new players.

• Cambridge Middle Schools (Peabody) Asst coaches needed.

• Holliston Middle School
• NIPMUC Regional High School serves the towns of Mendon & Upton and is located about 30 miles directly west of Boston. Nipmuc High School Frisbee is a competitive club team who's goal is to compete with the best teams in the state. We have a solid core of returning players who know the game and are enthusiastic about it. We have a club adviser who can take care of paperwork/tournament applications. We're searching for an onfield coach for the coming spring season. This position requires knowledge of the game and the ability to be at practice after school 2-3 days a week. The season runs from April to early June. We play a combination of weekday games and weekend tournaments. The position includes a $1,000 paid stipend. • Sharon: In need of coaches for our Girls team here in Sharon (High School) and at the Middle School.  We had 71 total players last year and expect the same again (co-ed for B and C teams).  The position does have a stipend with it that will be approx. $1,000.  It would require 2/3 practices a week and we have 7 games scheduled for them.  Interested applicants can email me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. From talking with coaches, 1-2 days per week is sufficient to generate interest and have a fun recreational after-school club. Building a competitive team requires 3-5 afternoons per week.

"I would say that ideal commitment is 3-5pm, four days a week (M-Th), plus two-three weekends per month, for the months of April and May. Coaches would be expected to plan and run practices, coach games, and perhaps develop training regiments for the players during their off season.

"If you can make the commitment then it is really worth it. The kids in the state are really great, the league is competitive (but not over the top) and the teams are exceptionally well spirited. No words can describe coaching a kid and then watching them throw their first forehand for a score, win their first game, or make their first D. It is also really great when you learn that many of them end up playing in college and that you have had a positive influence on their lives."

Beyond the fun of teaching ultimate, here's the job description:

"In all situations you will be required to collect USAU paperwork, complete the chaperone process, collect medical forms, sanction practices and convince someone to lease/loan you fields. You may also want to get shirts or discs, and guess who gets to use their credit card. If you are not over 21, USAU will not let you be a chaperone. In addition to the paperwork and any fees that need to be collected you will also need to organize games. Though I have been able to pass off many of these things to the kids, or at least one responsible parent, you will never-the-less have to maintain some level of control and responsibility. If you think the kids can organize this, then you and the team are likely to show up at some away game with the other team not there. The reality of life is that the kids are good, but not great."

Here's a typical job description from an established program. The description will differ for new teams...

is currently searching for a coach for their [Boys/Girls] [Varsity/JV] Ultimate team.

Responsibilities include:
- Leading practices with novice Ultimate players, 3:15 - 5:15, three
days a week (weekdays only, exact days negotiable)
- Coordinating curriculum with the Varsity and JVA coaches to ensure
consistency in skill and strategy development between teams
- Leading the team at 2 - 3 weekend tournaments, including at least
one involving travel
- Managing logistics of team travel and scheduling with opposing teams
- Assisting the Varsity and JVA coaches with tryouts
- Communicating with parents and school administrators
- Maintaining the highest level of safety for players at all practices
and tournaments.

Qualifications:
- Strong organizational skills and high level of responsibility
- Strong history of playing ultimate at a high level (several years of
college- or club-level play)
- Experience teaching youth in a sports or academic context

The position start date is March 19, but the selected candidate
will be expected to meet with the other coaches several times before
that. The season ends in early June.
